[10:44:36] -!- Roguish has joined #hazzy
[11:25:34] <Lcvette> morning
[11:25:56] <hazzy-m> morning
[11:26:09] <Lcvette> did you have a good birthday tiurboss?
[11:26:12] * hazzy-m is working on the tooltable again
[11:26:13] <Lcvette> turboss
[11:26:20] <Lcvette> whoohoo
[11:26:41] <Lcvette> lcvette is moving like a turtle with a bad back
[11:26:56] <Lcvette> and finishing his wifes cars rear suspension today finally
[11:27:06] <TurBoss> Normal
[11:27:06] <hazzy-m> Hurray!
[11:27:31] <TurBoss> Today and tomorrow
[11:27:54] <Lcvette> but then has to do the front cv axles still and the oil pan leak
[11:27:56] <Lcvette> meh
[11:28:00] <Lcvette> :(
[11:29:05] <hazzy-m> last night I found out that what I thought was a valve lifter noise was a valve hitting the piston ...
[11:29:05] <hazzy-m> :(
[11:29:32] <Lcvette> broken valve spring?
[11:29:56] <hazzy-m> Seat came out of the head and got wedget in under the valve
[11:30:05] <Lcvette> ah
[11:30:14] <Lcvette> pidton ok?
[11:30:23] <Lcvette> piston ok?
[11:30:52] <hazzy-m> it as a pretty good gouge
[11:31:10] * hazzy-m uploaded an image: IMG_20181025_210213326.jpg (353KB) < https://matrix.org >
[11:31:22] <Lcvette> how is the cylinder?
[11:31:28] <hazzy-m> fine
[11:32:20] <Lcvette> better mic it out
[11:32:58] <hazzy-m> How big of a problem is a gauge like that? Could I smoth it out so its not a hot spot?
[11:33:02] <Lcvette> hit like that usually will push the rings into the cylinder liner and cause some excessive wear
[11:33:32] <hazzy-m> ah, ok
[11:33:39] <hazzy-m> I'll check it
[11:34:08] <Lcvette> use a bore gauge and see if it shows signs of abnormal sizing near where the hit would have occured\
[11:34:25] <Lcvette> as for the piston, you should be fine smoothing it out proving it isn't micro fractured
[11:34:38] <Lcvette> providing
[11:35:08] <hazzy-m> Fantastic!
[11:35:41] <Lcvette> but i would not trust putting it back together as is after taking a hit like that
[11:36:23] <hazzy-m> does it look like that cylinder might have been running hot from the colorings on the piston? It has a lot less soot on it ..
[11:37:17] <Lcvette> i would suspect some ring damage and cylinder wear and would at the least pull that jug and have it cleaned up and a new piston installed
[11:38:10] <hazzy-m> yeah, pistons and jugs are pretty cheap ...
[11:38:52] <hazzy-m> I don't think it ran more than a few minutes after the seat came all the way out, but once the damage is done it is done, lol
[11:40:20] <Lcvette> i had a timing chain break on a 350 sbc and had some valves hit pistons briefly
[11:40:30] <Lcvette> needed a rebore and new pistons
[11:41:06] <Lcvette> i attempted to simply replace the timing chain and repaIR THE CYLINDER HEADS AND AFTER WARDS IT BILLOWED BLUE SMOKE
[11:41:11] <Lcvette> sorry for caps
[11:42:21] <Lcvette> upon disassembly i miced the cylinders and found the upper cylinders were gouged ever so slightly letting oil by
[11:42:58] <Lcvette> why i caution you to assume the worst and hope for the best before you spend a bunch of time reinstalling the motor to find a similar situation
[11:43:07] <Lcvette> none of my pistons looked as bad as that
[11:43:10] <Lcvette> lol
[11:43:59] <Lcvette> rings are very hard material
[11:44:07] <Lcvette> like cutting tools
[11:44:40] <Lcvette> if they are forced into the softer cylinder liner by a mechanical interference elswhere they become a cutting tool
[11:45:54] <hazzy-m> I'm hoping this still has the cast iron rings, in which case it might be ok, but I'll check for sure
[11:46:03] <hazzy-m> Since I have to do head work one one side any way I might as well do both, and then I might as well do a full rebuild while I have it that far apart. And If I do that then I should bore and stroke it ...
[11:46:05] <hazzy-m> LOL
[11:46:31] <Lcvette> nah
[11:46:53] <Lcvette> if compression is fine on the other sylinders i'd let it ride
[11:47:02] <Lcvette> just fix the bad hole
[11:47:53] <hazzy-m> well, that would be great if its realistic
[11:48:11] <Lcvette> however if it dropped a seat because it doesn't have hardened seats for unleaded fuels you may want to have that done to avoid any more from coming out
[11:48:50] <Lcvette> was it an exhaust valve?
[11:49:00] <hazzy-m> intake
[11:49:05] <Lcvette> hmmm
[11:49:54] <Lcvette> corvair cylinder heads
[11:50:04] <hazzy-m> yep ...
[11:50:14] <hazzy-m> there know for dropping seats
[11:50:25] <Lcvette> year?
[11:50:31] <hazzy-m> especialy a #5 intake, which this was
[11:50:37] <hazzy-m> 64
[12:01:56] <Lcvette> what size is it?
[12:02:02] <Lcvette> cid?
[12:02:13] <hazzy-m> 164
[12:02:25] <hazzy-m> its the 110 Hp monza engine
[12:03:09] <Roguish> old corvair joke; pull into a gas station and tell 'em, check the gas and fill up the oil................
[12:03:21] <Lcvette> lol
[12:03:28] <hazzy-m> LOL
[12:03:40] <hazzy-m> that's not a joke, its the truth
[12:04:01] <Roguish> an old neighbor had a bunch of corvairs, years ago. put an engine together with no gaskets, just RTV.
[12:04:10] <Roguish> leaked less .....
[12:05:47] <hazzy-m> This engine has viton seals and its never leaked a drop of oil, which a lot of people don't believe it possible wit corvair engines
[12:06:38] <hazzy-m> the only drops are from the shift linkage up front, lol
[12:11:50] <Lcvette> corvair with K20 swap
[12:11:57] <Lcvette> or K24
[12:12:01] <Lcvette> that would be pretty cool
[12:12:57] <hazzy-m> mid engine
[12:13:14] <Lcvette> rear
[12:13:37] <Lcvette> use the whole engine and tranny
[12:13:41] <hazzy-m> it would need to be reverse rotation
[12:13:49] <hazzy-m> I think
[12:13:52] <hazzy-m> oh, hmm
[12:13:56] <hazzy-m> that might work
[12:13:56] <Lcvette> no use the entire driveline
[12:14:06] <Lcvette> its cable shifted
[12:14:26] <Lcvette> just connect up the suspension and make some engine cradle mounts
[12:14:51] <Lcvette> i say K series because it has the exhaust in the back ofn the engine verse the old hondas withthe exhaust in the front
[12:15:02] <Lcvette> this way turbocharging would be easier
[12:16:13] <hazzy-m> I'd have to find a place for the radiator, lol
[12:16:47] <Lcvette> plenty of room up front no?
[12:16:52] <Lcvette> nothing up there
[12:16:53] <Lcvette> lol
[12:17:23] <Lcvette> kidding that would be a massive undertaking
[12:17:29] <Lcvette> lol
[12:18:19] <Lcvette> besides turbocharging the corvair motor looks to be so simple and affordable im suprised not every singfle corvair on the planet isn't turbocharged by now
[12:20:07] <hazzy-m> I know, fun to think about though. But the main thing that draws me to the corvairs are the funky engines, so i'd never do a swap anyway
[12:33:27] <Lcvette> thats just poor designing
[12:36:52] <Lcvette> bunch of dumb dumbs doing the work and not knowing how to properly design or size the piping, turbo, for the engine
[12:37:34] <Lcvette> the biggest thing would be making sure you had good fuel and proper intercooling for that air cooled engine
[12:37:40] <Lcvette> the biggest thing would be making sure you had good fuel and proper intercooling for that air cooled engine
[12:37:46] <Lcvette> the biggest thing would be making sure you had good fuel and proper intercooling for that air cooled engine
[12:40:39] <hazzy-m> I mean the stock turbo engines
[12:40:43] <hazzy-m> I mean the stock turbo engines

[12:40:48] <hazzy-m> I mean the stock turbo engines
[12:40:50] <hazzy-m> A lot of people like the non turbo engines better, especialy for general driving
[12:40:55] <hazzy-m> But I'm sure modern turbos are much better
[12:41:10] <Lcvette> here is an example of the same engine with two totally different setups on it
[12:47:06] <Lcvette> yes modern turbo desigbn is much better but also the help of fuel injection has come a long way and the knowledge of turbocharging has come a long way
