[11:13:02] <Lcvette> morning
[11:13:18] <Lcvette> computers boggle me
[11:13:51] <Lcvette> i have a dell laptop, its older, probably circa 2008-9
[11:13:57] <Lcvette> dell inspiron N5030
[11:14:14] <Lcvette> and it wa an awesome laptop for a long time but it just slowed down over time
[11:14:21] <Lcvette> why do computers do that?
[11:14:36] <Lcvette> it is now freshly cleaned and still slow
[11:14:56] <Lcvette> i installed (flame suit on) windows10)
[11:15:19] <Lcvette> had to to run the software for the bmw coding software i need to use
[11:15:33] <Lcvette> it is now updating windows 10 and taking like 2 hours
[11:15:41] <Lcvette> been running since this monring
[11:15:48] <Lcvette> around 9:30
[11:16:07] <Lcvette> battery is a problem for sure as im getting the blinking battery light
[11:16:26] <Lcvette> it charged suprisingly but now at full charge is blinking again probably a dead cell
[11:16:37] <Lcvette> but the speed is still soooo slow
[11:17:24] <hazzy-m> It should run much better with Win7, Win10 I find is almost unusable on older hardware
[11:17:53] <hazzy-m> did you install win10 fresh, or upgrade?
[11:17:53] <Lcvette> it ran horribly on windows 7
[11:18:06] <Lcvette> upgrade it was part of the free upgrade
[11:18:12] <Lcvette> figured why not
[11:19:09] <hazzy-m> I had to reinstall win7 after I tried the free "upgrade", because it was so much slower
[11:19:36] <hazzy-m> I wonder if you have some BAD ram, or maybe HDD
[11:19:52] <hazzy-m> what does the status monitor show the bottle neck is?
[11:19:55] <Lcvette> maybe?
[11:20:14] <Lcvette> i have some newer ram from not long ago that i bought to try and speed it up but it dodn't help much
[11:21:48] <Lcvette> wait, its not a clean install upgrade
[11:21:49] <Lcvette> lol
[11:21:54] <Lcvette> its an overwrite
[11:22:09] <Lcvette> maybe thats why?
[11:22:14] <Lcvette> i have transfered everything important over to flash drive
[11:22:41] <Lcvette> wonder if doing a clean reinstall would fix it?
[11:22:51] <Lcvette> althought i have no disks
[11:22:52] -!- Roguish has joined #hazzy
[11:24:36] <hazzy-m> I bet a clean install would make a big improvement, assuming nothing is wrong with the hardware
[11:25:39] <hazzy-m> I have disks, I can rip them and upload if you'd like
[11:27:46] <Lcvette> let me see if i can do a clean reinstall from the computer?
[11:27:52] <Lcvette> is that possible?
[11:28:06] <hazzy-m> I don't think so
[11:28:15] <Lcvette> have to wait for this update to finish first before it will let me do anything i think
[11:28:30] <Lcvette> its finally moving again
[11:28:34] <Lcvette> 57% on the installation
[11:28:42] <Lcvette> oh
[11:28:44] <Lcvette> :(
[11:30:08] <jthornton> if you have your serial number you can download windblows 7 and burn it to a DVD
[11:30:53] <Lcvette> hmmm.. i wonder if i have a copy of windows 7
[11:31:02] <Lcvette> seems like i thought i did at some point that i actually bought
[11:32:09] <hazzy-m> That machine I sent you should have a good win10 pro licence number on it ...
[11:32:22] <Lcvette> lcvette goes to dig through some old boxes in the closet
[11:33:21] <Lcvette> it has a windows 7 sticker on the front
[11:34:46] <hazzy-m> Yes, but I am pretty sure I upgraded that licence from win7 pro to win10 pro when they had the free upgrades
[11:35:20] * Lcvette uploaded an image: IMG_20181103_113443057.jpg (29KB) < https://matrix.org >
[11:35:21] <hazzy-m> if so you can download win10 from MS and use that key to activate it
[11:35:37] <Lcvette> Where is the key?
[11:36:29] <hazzy-m> should be lower right back corner
[11:36:50] <hazzy-m> on the side
[11:38:17] <Lcvette> its a windows 7 pro key
[11:42:13] <hazzy-m> the sticker is win7 pro, but it should work for win10 pro, since I used the key for upgrade
[11:42:22] <Lcvette> ah
[11:42:22] <hazzy-m> at least in the past it has always worked that way
[11:42:30] <Lcvette> gotcha
[11:43:07] <Lcvette> would it also work for windows 7 pro?
[11:43:26] <Lcvette> i had windows 7 home i think
[11:43:33] <Lcvette> thats what i bought
[11:43:46] <Lcvette> and i think my wife threw it out
[11:43:47] <Lcvette> :/
[11:44:02] <hazzy-m> yes, it should work for either win7 or win10 pro
[11:45:39] <hazzy-m> I think you can download win10 here: https://www.microsoft.com
[11:45:49] <Lcvette> https://www.microsoft.com
[11:45:56] <Lcvette> lol
[11:46:05] <Lcvette> i was thinking i would go back to windows 7
[11:46:15] <Lcvette> you said it was faster on older hardware
[11:46:27] <hazzy-m> thats new that you can download win7, good for them!!
[11:46:34] <Lcvette> yeah
[11:46:37] <Lcvette> pretty good
[11:46:50] <hazzy-m> yes, definitely use win7

[11:51:03] <hazzy-m> ok, give me a sec
[11:53:16] <hazzy-m> you need 32 or 64 bit?
[11:55:06] <Lcvette> i can't remember
[11:55:10] <Lcvette> lol one sec
[11:57:44] * Lcvette uploaded an image: IMG_20181103_115717950.jpg (189KB) < https://matrix.org >
[11:58:08] <Lcvette> 64bit?
[11:58:38] <hazzy-m> yep
[12:01:18] <Lcvette> its slow huh?
[12:01:42] <hazzy-m> no, not bad
[12:01:53] <hazzy-m> and you have 8gb ram
[12:02:00] <hazzy-m> I would think that would run fine
[12:04:21] <Lcvette> i have a 250gb ssd, wonder if i could replace my laptops hardrive ith it?
[12:07:29] <hazzy-m> is it a 2.5"? You probably could, that should improve things quite a bit
[12:07:46] * hazzy-m rips the win7 install DVD
[12:09:41] <Lcvette> https://www.amazon.com
[12:10:38] <hazzy-m> That should work!
[12:11:46] <Lcvette> found a video for my exact laptop and this exact ssd
[12:11:47] <Lcvette> lol
[12:12:05] <Lcvette> but he cloned it
[12:12:22] <Lcvette> does that m,atter if i would be doing a clean install of windows?
[12:13:01] <hazzy-m> No, you won't have to do anything, just put it in and install Windows
[12:13:49] <Lcvette> its currently got linuxcnc installed on it

[12:31:21] <pdadroid> I have not been here for a long time
[12:32:31] <pdadroid> there was a lot going on
[12:33:26] <hazzy-m> Welcome back! I'm sorry, but I don't remember you
[12:33:45] <Lcvette> so even if it has linux installed on the ssd, can i install it and then just format the drive
[12:34:53] <hazzy-m> Lcvette: Yes, everything will be overriten when you install win7
[12:35:16] <hazzy-m> you probably will not even need to format it
[12:35:24] <pdadroid> it's done peacefully I rarely come to irca because I have a complicated connection
[12:36:15] <Lcvette> Whoops its a corsair ssd 128gb
[12:36:22] <Lcvette> Is that enough?
[12:36:44] * Lcvette uploaded an image: VectorImage_2018-11-03_123632.jpg (103KB) < https://matrix.org >
[12:36:54] <hazzy-m> Lcvette: yes, that should be plenty
[12:37:03] <Lcvette> OK
[12:37:16] <hazzy-m> I've never had more than that, and I dual boot win7 and linux :)
[12:37:49] <Lcvette> k
[12:37:59] <hazzy-m> is it an air cooled SSD? (sorry, bad corvair joke )
[12:38:13] <Lcvette> yeah i doubt i will ever use more than that on this thing, i just use it for work
[12:39:09] <hazzy-m> pdadroid: Are you interested in using QtPyVCP?
[12:39:50] <Lcvette> i dont know if i can stop the installation of the updates
[12:40:18] <hazzy-m> you can! hold the power button, LOL
[12:40:50] <Lcvette> ok
[12:40:50] <Lcvette> it said not to do that
[12:41:01] <pdadroid> I'm curious about it but I have not met with it yet
[12:41:05] <hazzy-m> I have not patiance for those updates. At least they used to ask your permition in win7
[12:41:06] <Lcvette> i don't know if it would hurt anything
[12:44:32] <pdadroid> I have arduino nano and cnc shield but this project is stopped
[12:46:47] <hazzy-m> Lcvette: the OS is your servant, YOU are the master and tell it what to do, and it is suposed to help you. It has no place telling you what you can and can not do. And don't get me started on the win10 "welcome" screen ... lol
[12:48:07] <hazzy-m> pdadroid: Excellent! I ran my machine using an arduino and cnc shield for quite a while, its simple and worked well
[12:51:40] <pdadroid> you need the ability to get old scanners from cnc
[12:55:08] <pdadroid> Come right back to the next time reset the connection
[12:56:25] <pdadroid> ^_^ cnc from scanners
[13:05:26] <Lcvette> Hahaha

[13:37:31] <Lcvette> i just scoured my attic for the windows 7 disk and found..... what i thought was the windows 7 disk...i think remembered incorrectly as microsoft office 2007
[13:37:36] <Lcvette> :)
[13:37:43] <Lcvette> lol
[13:37:54] <Lcvette> I am old and have the madcow
[13:40:01] <Lcvette> i found a place i can buy and download windows 7 pro from though
[13:40:04] <Lcvette> for $39
[13:43:57] <Roguish> Lcvette: sorry for butting in. check ebay for win7. shouldn't be more than $10. usually from the UK. i've done it several times for different boxes.

[13:44:31] <Roguish> https://www.ebay.com
[13:45:22] <Lcvette> i need the actual iso, i have a key here
[13:45:23] <Roguish> win 10 is about the same. they're stripped off old computers and resold. legal in the UK and EU.
[13:45:54] <Roguish> should be able to easily find an iso on a torrent somewhere.
[13:46:17] <Lcvette> but if the key comes from an old box, microsoft apparantly directs you to the box manufacturer to obtain the software
[13:46:31] <Roguish> no they don't

[13:48:33] <Lcvette> i am nnot sure, its what is on the side of the box i got from Hazzy
[13:48:40] <Roguish> don't really know what to tell you, other than i've used the ebay thing several times successfully.

[13:49:58] <Lcvette> you use the softlay site to download?
[13:50:05] <Roguish> it's a Lenovo. could be like Dell.
[13:51:25] <Roguish> what are you looking for? a 64 bit or 32 bit?
[13:53:00] <Roguish> http://windowsiso.net
[13:54:25] <Lcvette> 64
[13:55:00] <Roguish> check out this https://answers.microsoft.com
[13:55:17] <Lcvette> I NEED PROFESSIONAL SO I CAN USE THE OLDER XP DRIVERS FOR THE SCANNING SOFTWARE I HAVE
[13:55:29] <Lcvette> whoops sorry for the caps

[13:56:10] <hazzy-m> Lcvette: WIn7 Pro SP1 64 bit: https://www.dropbox.com
[13:56:15] <Roguish> https://kickasstorrents.to
[13:56:45] <Roguish> hazzy-m. i thought about that too. I have lots of iso's
[13:57:36] <Lcvette> thanks Hazzy!!
[13:57:46] <Roguish> be forewarned. it will want to update, and that takes lots longer than the actual install. with several reboots.
[13:57:51] <hazzy-m> I'm always leary of the torrents for windows, windows is sketch enough as it is :D
[13:57:53] <Lcvette> im so excited right now,, this laptop has never run this good before its revived
[13:57:59] <Lcvette> im even going to buy a battery for it
[13:58:04] <Lcvette> lol
[13:59:25] <Roguish> Lcvette. that's why i use the ebay UK purchase. i've bought office, and adobe acrobat, and some others. cheap, relatively.
[14:00:13] <Lcvette> nice
[14:00:43] <Roguish> and i just dropped 4k for a solidworks license......
[14:00:48] <Roguish> ouch
[14:00:53] <Lcvette> i just replaced the hard drive with a ssd i had laying around, hazzy said i could do it
[14:01:23] <Lcvette> nice
[14:01:45] <Lcvette> transformed the old slow broke down laptop into a speedster
[14:04:56] <hazzy-m> Roguish: That's a good deal for SW! When I brother last got a license it was close to 10k
[14:04:58] <hazzy-m> What does that include, any simulation packages?
[14:05:21] <Lcvette> hazzy, so i will install windows over the stretch install i have on here?
[14:05:34] <hazzy-m> yes, if you don't need the stretch install
[14:05:40] <Roguish> well. it's the basic one. does include a year of support. worked the sales guy pretty hard.
[14:05:58] <Lcvette> i can keep stretch?
[14:06:15] <hazzy-m> You could also install along side stretch, but that's a little tricky
[14:06:17] <Lcvette> ok
[14:06:27] <Lcvette> probably over my head
[14:06:45] <Roguish> Lcvette. go slowly and read all the prompts carefully.
[14:07:15] <Roguish> you can't break anything. it's just software.............
[14:07:31] <Lcvette> you don't know me
[14:07:31] <hazzy-m> if you want to install stretch on the same SSD, its easy to add it back along side windows, but its harder to install windows along side stretch
[14:07:32] <Lcvette> lol
[14:07:33] <Roguish> not like crashing the cnc
[14:08:00] <Lcvette> i can crash the software im certain of it
[14:08:08] <hazzy-m> LOL
[14:08:27] * hazzy-m is of to bead blast some heads
[14:08:34] <hazzy-m> off*
[14:08:41] <Lcvette> enjoy!
[14:08:48] <Lcvette> stay away from the mating surfaces
[14:09:06] <Lcvette> and the valve seats and valve stem guides
[14:09:23] <hazzy-m> Lcvette: What about the valve seats, I'm told its ok to hit them lightly. What do you think?
[14:09:27] <Lcvette> and any oil passages block off
[14:09:36] <Lcvette> NO
[14:09:50] <Lcvette> unless you plan to have a vlave job done
[14:09:54] <hazzy-m> Ok! I trust you more!
[14:10:17] <hazzy-m> thanks!
[14:10:26] <Lcvette> best to do it with the valves installed
[14:10:28] <Lcvette> and plugs
[14:10:32] <Lcvette> old plugs
[14:10:42] <Lcvette> so you don't erode the plug threads

[14:11:03] <hazzy-m> ok, that makes sense
[14:11:19] <Lcvette> i used to do it alot when i ported heads
[14:11:28] <hazzy-m> how should I do the intake/exhaust ports?
[14:11:33] <Lcvette> block of ALL oil or water passages
[14:11:35] <hazzy-m> lots of gunk in there
[14:11:47] <Lcvette> i know you are air cooled soo water shouldn't be an issu
[14:12:20] <Lcvette> yeah but the grit will become lodged in nooks and crannys and won't come out until you fire up the motor
[14:12:37] <Lcvette> then you wil be building the motor
[14:12:50] <Lcvette> best to steam them clean
[14:13:02] <Lcvette> it will remove the gunk
[14:13:21] <Lcvette> or soak them
[14:13:44] <Lcvette> they are fairly small
[14:13:45] <hazzy-m> you've got me scared of blasting ...
[14:13:58] <Lcvette> blasting is ok but it requires careful planning
[14:14:11] -!- pdadroid has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
[14:14:12] <Lcvette> its not for the thoughtless
[14:14:19] <hazzy-m> I think I will pressure wash as much as I can first, and then blast what little is left
[14:14:20] <Lcvette> you can create more work for yourself
[14:14:43] <Lcvette> what are they iron?
[14:14:51] <hazzy-m> no, AL
[14:14:57] <Lcvette> oh aluminum?
[14:15:04] <hazzy-m> yes
[14:15:10] <Lcvette> yeah need to be careful with alum
[14:16:08] <Lcvette> often times with heads especially chambers and such you can cause pitting that will actually look great initally but make nice porous surface for csrbon build up to initiate
[14:16:38] <Lcvette> unless you plan to go back over the chambers and polish them out i would just clean them up good without blasting
[14:16:51] <hazzy-m> it's gotten soft from the heat cycles over 50yrs too, had the put time-serts in for the spark plug holes
[14:16:51] <Lcvette> the outside if you want to brighten them up would be ok
[14:17:05] -!- pdadroid3 has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[14:17:15] <hazzy-m> Ok, I will try to just clean them really well then
[14:17:20] <Lcvette> yeah maybe hot water clean with some good cleaner and pressure wash
[14:17:30] -!- pdadroid3 has joined #hazzy
[14:17:52] <Lcvette> then maybe some aluminum brightener instead may be your better friend
[14:18:05] <Lcvette> for aluminum i generally would only use walnut shells
[14:18:33] <hazzy-m> shoot, I just changed the cabinet over from walnut to beads, LOL
[14:18:40] <Lcvette> its a soft enough media that it won't damage the base
[14:18:58] <Lcvette> glass is a bit aggressive for aluminum heads
[14:19:43] <Lcvette> there used to be a great sovent i used once the heads were cleaned and it would really bring out that bright silver in the heads im trying to think of the name
[14:22:30] <Lcvette> easy off
[14:22:37] <Lcvette> oven cleaner was what i used i think
[14:23:22] <Lcvette> it will deep clean once the heavy stuff is off
