[12:19:39] <jepler> right now that build error is unavoidable, it's due to a debian security fix. I let seb know out-of-band and he's looking into whether it can be worked around. Basically, due to a security problem in the software that imagemagick uses to read and write PDFs, they have created a "policy" that disables all reading/writing of pdf files. But this is a part of our doc generation toolchain. This breaks a LOT of stuff so maybe
[12:19:40] <jepler> Debian will also revise what they've done soon. One can hope.
[12:20:15] <jepler> for the rip and test builds, he could modify a single file in /etc once, but for the deb builds the package is installed fresh each time.
[12:21:14] <jepler> Right now only rpi is affected because this security update is in the main raspbian repository but right now is not in the primary debian repository, only the debian security repository. because of long ago reasons, related to needing to depend only on packages in the last debian release by version number, the builders only install from the primary debian repository, which in turn is updated only when debian does point
[12:21:14] <jepler> releases.
[12:21:33] <jepler> now back to your regularly scheduled frustrating lack of packages from our CI system... but with a little more background

[12:28:26] <andypugh> I am thinking of pushing the chinese docs to 2.8 but with PDF turned off. I really have no idea how to start debugging tex and friends.

[15:11:54] <jepler> thanks, that's nice to hear. andy is putting in a ton of work on this and he deserves the praise
[15:12:09] <Tom_L> did the us docs get figured out?
[15:12:43] <Tom_L> yeah he has and does
[15:13:05] <Tom_L> but you're there when help is needed too
[15:14:40] -!- c-log has joined #linuxcnc-devel
[15:32:19] <jepler> no, the doc building error has not been resolved: "convert-im6.q16: attempt to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy `PDF' @ error/constitute.c/IsCoderAuthorized/408."
[15:33:12] <jepler> unless calling a decision debian made "dumb" counts as figuring it out .. we understand the cause, but a solution is not implemented.

[17:30:08] <andypugh> jepler: Do you understand the debian packaging and menus at all? I am trying to find out how (or if) cnc.directory.in (and similar) get converted and then find their way in the the right places in the debian folder (and at which point).
[17:32:25] <andypugh> (I am wondering if they need to be put there by hand)
[17:47:45] <seb_kuzminsky> andypugh: those files live in debian/ in the git repo, they don't get copied there
[18:18:10] <linuxcnc-build> build #343 of 1650.rip-buster-rtpreempt-rpi4 is complete: Failure [4failed install-missing-build-dependencies configuring] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org blamelist: Markus <seebaer1976@web.de>, Chris Morley <chrisinnanaimo@hotmail.com>
[18:18:11] <linuxcnc-build> build #6982 of 0000.checkin is complete: Failure [4failed] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org blamelist: Markus <seebaer1976@web.de>, Chris Morley <chrisinnanaimo@hotmail.com>
[18:39:41] <jepler> looks lke cnc.directory.in should be processed to cnc.directory, and then installed in /usr/share; it's listed in debian/extras/linuxcnc.files:usr/share/desktop-directories/cnc.directory
[18:40:19] <jepler> but whether that's working properly, I don't know. dwrobel(?) added extra categories to the actual desktop files, implying that this was not working for them, or else was undesirable. I accepted the changes even though I didn't fully understand the issue
[18:40:44] <jepler> gnome/xdg menus probably have changed since the era where we crafted those, though they seem to work with xfce
[18:40:50] <jepler> "desktop files" as they're confusingly called
[19:00:12] <andypugh> I don’t like how all the applications and docs enf up mushed together in one long list, especially if Chineses docs are going to be added to it.
[19:00:37] <andypugh> But perhaps I need to look at Master to see if something changed
[19:10:17] <jepler> "regular" SW doesn't put its docs in the system menus like we do..
[19:12:51] <andypugh> “Regular” software nowadays keeps all docs in the Cloud….
[19:13:15] <andypugh> And when you find them, they don’t tell you anything you wanted to know.
[19:14:14] <andypugh> (I am looking at you, Autodesk), I don’t want to watch a video to find out how to do every simple task)
[19:15:47] <Tom_L> heh
[19:40:41] <jepler> What if it's Sam who makes the videos? There may be something to this
[19:41:18] -!- cncuser has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
[19:47:17] <andypugh> Right, enough ot this, time to sleep.
[19:48:25] <andypugh> I am half-tempted to take the week off of work to try to do some workshop stuff. I still have 100% of my annual leave unused.
