[06:20:55] <jthornton> morning
[06:25:07] <XXCoder> hey
[06:29:20] <Net|> have you guys tried tinycorelinux yet ?
[06:29:29] <Net|> i see new linuxcnc is out
[06:31:16] <XXCoder> jthornton: tried to copy rolfmill (2.7 still has that) and permission denied
[06:32:15] <XXCoder> ./rolfmill.hal:55: execv(./rolfmill): Permission denied
[06:35:11] <XXCoder> im kinda pretty sure 2.8 version 3axis-tutorial also would have same issue
[06:35:35] <XXCoder> Net|: hey not really
[06:39:24] <jthornton> alright the chickens are away and no one laid an egg from the roost
[06:39:38] <jthornton> XXCoder: not sure what your saying
[06:40:09] <XXCoder> if you select rolfmill (or 3axis-tutorial) and make a local copy for modifications you will get permission error
[06:40:26] <XXCoder> its probably not +x at installation
[06:40:33] <XXCoder> or maybe its user access
[06:40:35] <jthornton> odd
[06:40:42] <XXCoder> lemme try +X
[06:41:39] <XXCoder> yep +x needed
[06:42:12] <jthornton> I made a copy using linuxcnc of rolf mill in master and the files have me as owner except for one dumb halib file which is so dumb to be a symlink
[06:45:50] <jthornton> it's wrong if you have to modify file permissions when you have linuxcnc config launcher copy the files
[06:46:06] <XXCoder> yeah
[06:46:38] <XXCoder> so 2 files need to be fixed, rolfmill and 3axis-tutorial (across 2 versions of linuxcnc)
[06:46:42] <jthornton> I always build linuxcnc and test any changes I do before commiting them
[06:47:21] <XXCoder> whats odd is copy I sent you had +x
[06:48:39] <jthornton> I don't know what +x is
[06:48:49] <XXCoder> oh exec permissions
[06:49:20] <jthornton> none of the config files need execution permission
[06:49:30] <XXCoder> yeah but the vismach file requires it
[06:49:54] <jthornton> ah yea that does require it, I assumed you were talking about the ini or hal file
[06:50:15] <XXCoder> yeah not those :)
[06:50:49] <XXCoder> i like idea of vismach being also copied also, since its also where majority of comments is in.
[06:51:05] <XXCoder> other vismach files is nigh-impossible to find if you dont know where those are stored at
[06:51:41] <XXCoder> but problems with permissions hm i dont know how to alter it so it sets +x on vismach file.
[06:52:42] <jthornton> I don't know why rolfmill does not have +x for you because from master (before your change) it does have +x
[06:54:56] <XXCoder> mine is 2.7 version of rolfmill maybe 2.8 has +x while 2,7 doesnt? how do you check anyway
[06:56:20] <jthornton> that is really odd because 2.7 should be exactly the same as 2.8 before your PR
[06:56:25] -!- m0n5t3r has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[06:56:29] <Tom_L> morning
[06:56:44] <XXCoder> yeah it should be as mine is 2.7 so its still rolfmill and not 3axis-tutorial
[06:57:12] <XXCoder> i wonder if when it copies from orginial location to my linuxcnc in home dir it fails to copy attribite +x also?
[06:57:16] <jthornton> are you going to make a tutorial to go along with the configuration?
[06:57:18] <Tom_L> 21°F Hi 44 & clear
[06:57:23] <XXCoder> lemme see where orginial
[06:59:35] <XXCoder> orginial file at /usr/share/doc/linuxcnc/examples/sample-configs/sim/axis/vismach/rolfmill file has rw r r permission
[07:01:17] <weenerdog> snowmageddon 2018 :)))
[07:01:32] <XXCoder> once a while I wish it snows here
[07:01:39] <XXCoder> so I dont gonna go to work lol
[07:01:49] <XXCoder> only couple days mind
[07:06:54] <XXCoder> jthornton: thought you was planning to write it?
[07:07:39] <XXCoder> maybe i forgot dunno
[07:21:00] <jthornton> I said it was a good idea to have a chapter in the documents vismach tutorial to go along with a configuration that is called tutorial
[07:21:23] <XXCoder> ahh ok
[07:21:43] <jthornton> hmm now I need to get my ssh key set back up on this pc :(
[07:21:54] <XXCoder> shouldnt be too complex
[07:25:19] <jthornton> no just one more thing of the million things to get working when you build a new pc :(
[07:25:53] <XXCoder> if I recall right (havent needed to do it since 2009) you could just copy and restore private key
[07:33:47] <jthornton> and just when I thought I had the 2TB drive setup correctly I find it's owned by Root

[08:23:49] <XXCoder> lol
[08:24:08] <jthornton> damn finally found it borg init --encryption=none /path/to/repo
[08:25:07] <jthornton> there doesn't seem to be an end to the borg man page...

[09:24:36] <jdh> because they don't know how to use cat(1)
[09:34:55] <jthornton> cat(1)
[09:34:55] <jthornton> bash: syntax error near unexpected token `1'

[14:01:22] <sensille> if i want to mill a workpiece from several sides, i need to find the proper coordinates again after turning. there a probably a ton of tricks to do that. does that have a specific name? is that part of every machining book?
[14:02:50] <syyl> all of the above ;)
[14:03:11] <syyl> search terms: edgefinder, probing
[14:03:58] <sensille> linuxcnc can probably do that, given the workpice is metal
[14:05:00] <sensille> ah, edge finder is a device :)
[14:05:22] <sensille> i want that :)
[14:09:16] <sensille> and to mount a workpiece upright a machine vice is probably the easiest way
[14:09:47] <Rab> Mechanical edgefinder is cheap and awesome! Requires manual jogging and zeroing, though. https://smile.amazon.com
[14:14:04] <sensille> is there something similar to find the top?
[14:14:57] <Rab> That's a great question, but I don't have an answer.
[14:15:05] <jdh> jog and a gauge pin
[14:26:20] <sensille> gauge pin to have a flat surface?

[14:39:51] <sensille> Loetmichel: as i can't tap with the machine, which tool do i use instead, from sorotec?
[14:41:29] -!- Robh__ has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
[14:42:45] <sensille> "gewindewirbler"?
[14:43:22] <rmu> sensille: gewindefräser?
[14:43:48] <sensille> so probably these https://www.sorotec.de
[14:45:02] <rmu> they are expensive
[14:46:17] <sensille> normally loetmichel always points me to that shop as being not too expensive. i look somewhere else
[14:46:46] <Loetmichel> nope
[14:46:56] <Loetmichel> i never said that they are not expensive
[14:47:04] <Loetmichel> they are. but worht EVERY penny
[14:47:08] <Loetmichel> worth
[14:47:09] <sensille> yeah, that
[14:47:20] <sensille> so not too expensive
[14:48:07] <Loetmichel> i see often how the quality of mill bits is from ebay that a coworker carries to the company mill
[14:49:38] <Loetmichel> i am to cheap to buy a set of 100 2mm tungsten carbide two flute mill bits from ebay for $50 and rather buy a 10 pack from sorotec for the same price because i know that i get sharp mill bits AND they last forever.
[14:49:47] <sensille> until now everything from sorotec works nice
[14:49:57] <Loetmichel> (provided i dont break them off)
[14:50:01] <Loetmichel> exactly
[14:50:28] <sensille> the collets made all the difference
[14:50:35] <Loetmichel> i can imagine
[14:50:43] <Loetmichel> was that chinese collet THAT far off?
[14:52:01] <sensille> yes, or i did it wrong. with the new collet the milling result was +- 0.03mm
[14:52:16] <HighInBC> I got measuring tape from china once and it was 27% too short
[14:52:28] <HighInBC> it was a source of great confusion until I figured it out
[14:52:32] <sensille> "chinese cm"
[14:52:35] <HighInBC> lol
[14:53:27] <sensille> still, the gewindefraeser is expensive :-/
[14:54:10] <Loetmichel> it is
[14:54:27] <Loetmichel> and its prone to breaking if you do something wrong
[14:54:36] <Loetmichel> but if you do it right its awesome
[14:57:33] <Loetmichel> HighInBC: i once got measurement tape that was about 20% too short... was equally confusing.
[14:58:03] <HighInBC> I cut it up before throwing it out, lest some homeless person end up measuring things wrong
[14:58:19] <sensille> :)
