[04:07:20] <Loetmichel> *GNAAAAA* Today is NOT my day. first one of the contacts on the Z stepper on the CNC mill developed a fault. Workpiece: scrap metal. Then the mill bit had a broken edge because of the plunge, so the VFD stopped with overcurrent error... second workpiece: scrap. and to top it off the RCD for the workshop just tripped. thankfully without another workpiece scrap, because i am now short in 8mm
[04:07:20] <Loetmichel> alu... an all that on my 50th birthday .-(
[04:10:10] <CNC_Brian> Is there an alarm output on the VFD. Maybe wire its to the e-stop circuit
[04:12:29] <sensille> Loetmichel: 50? and you said you were old ...
[04:33:50] <Loetmichel> sensille: i DO FEEL old today
[04:34:30] <sensille> but that started 30 years ago, no?
[04:35:37] <Loetmichel> nope
[04:36:08] <Loetmichel> today i feel especially old... its one of these day where one should have stayed in bed
[04:37:59] <sensille> i hear 20 year olds complaining about feeling old
[04:38:54] -!- togo has joined #linuxcnc
[04:39:13] <Loetmichel> sensille: usually i complain a lot about feeling old... despite being one of the more muscular and fit guys in the company ;)

[04:43:09] <Jymmm> Loetmichel: So, how exciting was it when they invented rock?
[04:43:28] <Jymmm> ...or dirt (your choice)
[04:46:49] <Jymmm> Loetmichel: Age is just an attitude =)
[04:47:44] <Loetmichel> Jymmm: indeed ;)
[04:49:23] <rmu> happy birthday Loetmichel!
[04:49:31] <gloops> engraving brass name plate with router - how quick is this, say for a 75mm x 50 plate with a few lines of text - and how deep does the engraving need to be to see the text on the plate properly?
[04:49:51] <Loetmichel> thanks, rmu
[04:49:56] -!- syyl has joined #linuxcnc
[04:50:36] <Jymmm> Loetmichel: !!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!
[04:51:31] <Jymmm> gloops: Once you engrave the text, you can backfill using oil based enamal paint using a rag.
[04:51:33] <Loetmichel> thanks
[04:51:35] <rmu> gloops: it probably depends on whether you engrave the letters or have them stand out.
[04:51:51] <Jymmm> gloops: USA?
[04:51:55] <Loetmichel> gloops: depends on your machine
[04:52:03] <Loetmichel> i can do engravings pretty fast
[04:52:11] <gloops> i just want a simple engraving, v cut or something, like a dog tag, but neatish
[04:52:15] <Loetmichel> and 0,3mm depth is usually sufficient
[04:52:18] <gloops> in the UK
[04:52:47] <Loetmichel> https://www.youtube.com
[04:53:11] <gloops> so .3mm maybe .1mm passes - should be pretty quick, im wanting to offer option of brass plate on some of my boxes but i dont want to get into it unless its pretty quick and no hassly
[04:53:13] <gloops> hassle
[04:53:43] <gloops> like i dont want the plate to take longer than the box lol
[04:54:47] <gloops> Jymmm filling should allow a shallower cut - will stand out as good as a deep unfilled cut
[04:55:37] <gloops> that looks easy enough Loetmichel, ill order a few bits of brass to play with then
[04:56:46] <Jymmm> gloops: coulda woulda shoulda, with and without backfill... https://www.google.com
[04:57:31] <gloops> ahh yeah, that top middle one is perfect
[04:58:06] <gloops> so needs filling, thats no problem anyway
[04:59:30] <Jymmm> gloops: Just use rags made from old tshirts, and rub in the paint in little circles, then wipe off the excess and let dry.
[05:00:05] <Jymmm> rub and buff
[05:00:17] <gloops> ill have a go with that, it does look a lot better
[05:01:20] <Jymmm> gloops: It's super easy and fast
[05:03:33] <gloops> https://www.ebay.co.uk
[05:03:40] <gloops> 1mm, .5mm maybe
[05:04:35] <Jymmm> gloops: search for "brass name plate blank"
[05:05:46] <Jymmm> - blank
[05:11:18] <gloops> hmm doesnt pull much up in the UK, probably have to find plates at convenient sizes - definitely dont want to be doing much sizing
[05:12:20] <Jymmm> get rid of the word "blank"
[05:14:19] -!- asdfasd1 has joined #linuxcnc
[05:17:48] <gloops> thats pretty cheap https://www.ebay.co.uk
[05:18:47] <gloops> im only thinking around 100x50 plates, so would get 5 or so out of that
[05:19:05] <gloops> if there was any demand i could see about having them ready cut to size
[05:19:52] <Jymmm> gloops: Unless you happen to be good at cutting brass and still have it look nice, I'd use pre-cut =)
[05:21:25] <gloops> probably cut with bandsaw, but then theres the edges to finish - need to change blade on saw etc, id rather pay a few pence more for ready cut , ive ordered some of that to play with anyway
[05:22:35] -!- miss0r|office has joined #linuxcnc
[05:23:57] <XXCoder> cant finish edges by cnc also
[05:23:59] <XXCoder> ?
[05:24:04] <XXCoder> yo
[05:25:09] <gloops> you can but im suspecting its going to be time consuming
[05:25:32] <gloops> probably quicker to run over grinder, a bit of filing/sandpaper etc
[05:26:12] <gloops> and all those 'little' jobs turn into me getting bogged down with hours of tedium lol
[05:26:45] <CNC_Brian> Guy's, having fun and games getting a parallel port to load with Linux Mint
[05:26:59] <gloops> will see when i get some brass anyway, it might cut it like butter
[05:27:03] <CNC_Brian> HAL reports it cant see the hardware
[05:27:05] -!- syyl has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[05:27:36] <Jymmm> gloops: Thin stock you can cut with tin snips, it's the curling of the brass
[05:28:19] <rmu> hmm. found a cast iron surface plate 5×3m
[05:28:32] <rmu> no place to put it :(
[05:28:32] <gloops> yeah thats the problem Jymmm, you dont want to be messing about with it too much really
[05:28:57] <Jymmm> gloops: and that's why I suggested getting pre-made blanks =)
[05:31:53] <rmu> zeiss-made
[05:32:11] <gloops> well i should have some by the weekend so i can do some testing - ill try a profile cut with 6mm cutter see what time is involved

[06:43:12] <CNC_Brian> Help!
[06:43:36] <CNC_Brian> Installed 2.8 and trying to get it to use a parallel port
[06:43:54] <CNC_Brian> No matter what I do it says can't find
[06:44:12] <CNC_Brian> If I install the 2.7 live it works fine
[06:44:35] <CNC_Brian> Have remove the parport_pc module
[06:53:29] <XXCoder> hey dunno your usecase is bit strange

[07:10:35] <CNC_Brian> For QTPYVCP
[07:18:11] <jthornton> CNC_Brian: I don't know if you noticed but hazzy-m merged the data channel branch to master yesterday
[07:18:40] <jthornton> that brings some great enhancements and improvements to QtPyVCP
[07:18:56] <CNC_Brian> Im still on the branch from last week.
[07:20:01] <CNC_Brian> Trying to get a config running on a new faster PC, but having a nightmare with the PCIe parallel port. Its showing in lshw at 0xd000, but HAL will not take it
[07:20:29] <CNC_Brian> Going to have to buy a 7i76
[07:20:44] <jthornton> yuck, IIRC some pcie parallel port cards have problems and won't work
[07:21:13] <CNC_Brian> The crazy thing is its been working fine with 2.7 live image
[07:21:15] <XXCoder> it apparently works with 2.7 is there that dont workj with just 2.8?
[07:21:34] <jthornton> https://mesaus.com
[07:21:49] <jthornton> yea that is strange that it works on 2.7 but not 2.8
[07:21:55] <CNC_Brian> I fancy an ethernet attached
[07:22:52] <CNC_Brian> Is the 7i76 a decent card?
[07:23:12] <jthornton> yea it's an awesome card
[07:23:19] <CNC_Brian> I only have a 3 axis maching
[07:23:50] <jthornton> then you prob want the 7i96 it's a lot less money for up to 5 axes
[07:24:26] <jthornton> https://mesaus.com
[07:24:39] <CNC_Brian> Yes I like the fact it has the BOB built in. Nice and tidy in the electrical cab
[07:25:07] <CNC_Brian> I will do PCM for my spindle I assume?
[07:25:13] <jthornton> I wrote a configuration tool for the 7i96 card https://github.com
[07:25:20] <jthornton> pwm yes
[07:25:37] <CNC_Brian> So that will make a customer bit file?
[07:26:26] <jthornton> no, it can read/flash the card and build your configuration files
[07:27:16] <CNC_Brian> So I find a bit file which has all the IO I need and then flash it
[07:27:42] <CNC_Brian> Your tool then populate the ini file with the pins
[07:28:02] <CNC_Brian> Hal file I should say
[07:29:54] <jthornton> it comes flashed with either 4 stepgens and pwm or 5 stepgens and no pwm
[07:29:59] -!- Elmo40 has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[07:31:36] <CNC_Brian> Nice!
[07:33:38] <CNC_Brian> Wow you can even connect you old school BOB for even more IO
[07:34:44] <jthornton> yea it's an awesome card at an low price
[07:35:31] <CNC_Brian> The e version is just faster I take it
[07:35:45] <jthornton> e version of what?
[07:36:47] <CNC_Brian> There is a 7i76E but I think its just more IO 48 ports
[07:36:51] <CNC_Brian> Don't need that
[07:37:02] <CNC_Brian> Its also twice the price
[07:37:27] <jthornton> oh yea the 7i76e has more I/O but same speed I think
[07:38:43] <jthornton> you can plug the 7i73 https://mesaus.com
[07:38:51] <jthornton> into the 7i96 for a pendant
[07:39:28] <CNC_Brian> Yes would love a rotary encoder for jog
[07:49:47] <Loetmichel> CNC_Brian: make one yourself
[07:50:06] <XXCoder> can find one for $12 or so
[07:50:11] <XXCoder> or cheaper for less quality lol
[07:50:25] <CNC_Brian> I cna manage 12 :-)
[07:51:12] <Loetmichel> if all else fails: take a small stepper and a few diodes and a few Schmitt-trigger gates... voila, instant encoder with 200 "lines"/rev, just needs a certein mininimum rotation speed to register the steps
[07:52:43] <CNC_Brian> Yes I have seem someone using the BLDC motor out of an old DVD drive to this.
[08:02:18] -!- justanotheruser has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
[08:07:46] <rmu> was AFK
[08:07:55] <rmu> CNC_Brian: if it works with 2.7 it will also work with 2.8
[08:08:42] <CNC_Brian> Its probably because In using Mint 17.3
[08:09:13] -!- gloops has joined #linuxcnc
[08:09:15] <CNC_Brian> In the live 2.7 the lspci you cant see the parallel port
[08:09:19] <rmu> CNC_Brian: what kerne do you use?
[08:09:33] <rmu> CNC_Brian: why don't you use the 2.7 live as base?
[08:09:42] <jthornton> the 2.7 he is using is debian and 2.8 is linux mint
[08:09:50] <CNC_Brian> In mint 17.3 I remove the parport_pc module and it looks the same
[08:10:05] <CNC_Brian> Not showing in lspci
[08:10:34] <CNC_Brian> But hal cant connect to it. I give up and just ordered a mesa 7i76
[08:10:44] <CNC_Brian> Life is too short
[08:10:46] <jthornton> are you using 17.3 because your pc is very old?
[08:11:04] <CNC_Brian> I hack Pathpilot also
[08:11:38] <rmu> i'm not sure about parport_pc. mesa hostmot 7i90 epp driver needs parport_pc loaded AFAIK
[08:12:03] <rmu> mesa card is the better choice anyways
[08:12:21] <CNC_Brian> Yes im just being cheap.
[08:12:50] <CNC_Brian> I have 3 machines so at £160 including tax and shipping it a lot of money
[08:13:24] <sensille> which fpga do those mesa cards use?
[08:15:18] <CNC_Brian> Not sure.
[08:16:01] <sensille> it's not that easy to find on their pages, too
[08:16:13] <rmu> sensille: source code is available, it includes types of FPGA
[08:16:54] <sensille> hostmot2?
[08:17:18] <CNC_Brian> My eye site it too poor to make my own FPGA cards!
[08:17:41] <sensille> bgas mostly self-align :P
[08:19:30] <CNC_Brian> Yes looks like a BGA. Way too much effort
[08:19:42] <sensille> spartan2-spartan6
[08:20:06] <sensille> there are cheap spartan6 eval boards on aliexpress, but not as pci-cards
[08:22:46] <CNC_Brian> I want an ethernet link so I can use a laptop to run Linuxcnc on
[08:23:07] <CNC_Brian> Just disable step speed in the kernel and work fine
[08:23:45] <sensille> hm. i have an fpga-eval board with onboard ethernet. could try that
[08:25:23] <rmu> sensille: i think some machinekit people did kind of a port do de0-soc-nano http://blog.machinekit.io
[08:29:06] <CNC_Brian> Yes would be nice to have open source controller. I suppose if you have a half decent servo based machine the price of a mesa is small beer
[08:29:30] <CNC_Brian> Its just us home DIY where it hurts
[08:30:54] <Loetmichel> there are several open source (or beerware) servo controllers out there. UHU is one that i remember
[08:48:11] <rmu> stmbl
[08:48:41] <rmu> CNC_Brian: mesa is open source
[08:49:01] <rmu> and decent qualtiy hardware is always gonna cost money
[09:08:52] <CNC_Brian> Mesa is only a small company so happy to support them. The basic card arnt that much money
[09:18:33] -!- FinboySlick has joined #linuxcnc
[09:35:54] <mozmck> Hmmm, http://linuxcnc.org
[09:36:17] <mozmck> It says there: "Caution Never use an M2 in a O-word subroutine, including this one. It will cause hard-to-find errors. For instance, using an M2 in a subroutine will not end the subroutine properly and will leave the subroutine NGC file open, not your main program."
[09:37:11] <mozmck> Yet the example referenced (configs/sim/axis/remap/rack-toolchange) has an m2 in the on_abort.ngc subroutine...
[09:39:20] -!- HSD has joined #linuxcnc
[09:43:46] <mozmck> I'm not sure that caution against m2 in a subroutine is valid, since I see no mention of such a thing elsewhere, and m2 is used in every external file o-word subroutine I've looked at.

[12:25:00] <Jymmm> Think it'll power a single led???
[12:26:24] <pcw_home> it will self-discharge fast enough that a single LED load will be unnoticeable

[13:34:47] <Tom_L> then open the pin list on the left and select the ones you wanna watch
[13:34:50] <CNC_Brian> Is that on AXIS
[13:34:55] <Tom_L> yes
[13:35:15] <CNC_Brian> Im using my own UI
[13:35:33] <CNC_Brian> Is there a cli command?
[13:36:03] <CNC_Brian> Ive got like 4 hal files and it s right mess
[13:36:12] <Tom_L> probably but i'm not familiar with it
[13:36:18] <CNC_Brian> Though if I had a concise list
[13:36:38] <CNC_Brian> Cool thanks anyway for responding
[13:37:38] <CNC_Brian> Im moving form a parallel card to a mesa, but want to keep some of the connections on the parallel, like coolant, etc
[13:38:02] <CNC_Brian> Just going to move the motion control first
[13:42:50] <Tom_L> http://linuxcnc.org
[13:42:53] <Tom_L> maybe
[13:43:22] <hazzy-m> I haven't been in here much lately, but it seems Ichs Guks hasn't been around lately. Anybody know if he is ok?
[13:43:31] <tiwake> I feel like blarf today
[13:43:35] <Tom_L> word is he died
[13:43:58] <Tom_L> <PL7icnc> gloops, i dident make it to Ich restplace
[13:44:51] <Tom_L> supposedly PL7icnc took his place at the uni and is reposting some of his videos
[13:45:00] <hazzy-m> CNC_Brian: I like using `halcmd show pin` so get a list of all the pins
[13:45:54] <hazzy-m> Tom_L: that is sad news indeed :(
[13:45:57] <Tom_L> http://linuxcnc.org
[13:46:06] <Tom_L> that looks like the cmd interface to it
[13:46:29] <Tom_L> or maybe not...
[13:47:29] <Tom_L> one of those should get you close to what you're after though
[13:47:55] <hazzy-m> `halcmd -s show pin` lists the pins in a format conveniant for use in scripts
[13:48:30] <Tom_L> is there a page showing halcmd details?
[13:50:25] -!- jerryq has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[13:51:32] <hazzy-m> not sure, but `halcmd -h` is pretty helpful
[13:52:53] <hazzy-m> you can even use patterns, halcmd show pin halui* to list all the halui pins
[14:09:00] <CNC_Brian> And Im run-in place do need to do that via rip-environment script.
[14:09:04] <CNC_Brian> Thanks!!!!

[15:40:27] <CNC_Brian> Trying to unpick my horrible hal files
[15:41:54] <JT-Shop> you got a 7i76E?
[15:42:16] <CNC_Brian> Ordered it today.
[15:42:40] <CNC_Brian> £160
[15:50:12] <JT-Shop> I wonder if pncconf can make a 7i76E config???

[21:02:35] <CaptHindsight> 1/2 wide

[21:02:43] <Tom_L> typically not
[21:02:54] <CaptHindsight> trying to avoid having to split a wide roll
[21:02:55] <Jymmm> and that's what I first suggested... foil DUCT (hvac) tape
[21:03:11] <CaptHindsight> but really really sticky
[21:03:27] <Jymmm> Yes, meant to go on hot ducts
[21:03:37] <Tom_L> compare the glue they use in the one you linked to HVAC tape
[21:03:39] <CaptHindsight> probably will have to add some epoxy to be sure it stays
[21:03:48] <Jymmm> CaptHindsight: on what?
[21:03:58] <CaptHindsight> HDPE, 10-40 C
[21:04:05] <Tom_L> that stuff sticks pretty good
[21:04:24] <Jymmm> whats 10-40C?
[21:04:36] <CaptHindsight> maybe i just used cheap brands of foil tape before
[21:04:42] <CaptHindsight> temp range
[21:04:53] <CaptHindsight> 50f - 110f
[21:05:02] <Jymmm> Of hell yes, it'll stick. IT's meant to HOT ducts
[21:05:12] <CaptHindsight> a good brand
