[01:11:36] <XXCoder> fun
[01:12:02] <gloops> seemed like a reasonable idea when i agreed haha
[01:14:59] <gloops> mostly motorway which is good, motorway system round north manchester is a bowl of spaghetti though, my reactions arent so sharp navigating these things, could end up anywhere

[14:47:17] <Joe_Hildreth> Hello all. I am working on an addendum to the video I put out on LinuxCNC and the parallel port. I would like to create a list of parallel port cards that work with (or don't work with) LCNC.
[14:48:01] <Joe_Hildreth> I have created a page to store this information on my website, that I am happy to copy to the wiki or elsewhere for everyone's benefit.
[14:48:13] -!- ve7it has joined #linuxcnc
[14:48:34] <Joe_Hildreth> At this point I am trying to hammer out the details of what the list should include. I was thinking of the following:
[14:49:31] <Joe_Hildreth> Manufacturer, Model, Vendor ID, device ID, Chipset and notes. Anyone think this is enough fields, or should I consider more?
[14:50:27] <Joe_Hildreth> Here is a link to the stub page if anyone is interested.

[16:04:30] <pink_vampire> no
[16:11:14] <XXCoder> so whats 4 bolts for
[16:18:37] <jdh> to hold things together.
[16:22:57] <zmoo> i know i know.Any advice on Lead screw type for z axis, 350mm length, but does it matter what brand ACME, or china cold rolled C7
[16:23:39] <zmoo> it requires bolts or lead screws , bolts would be better for stability if machining

[18:05:01] <XXCoder> whatw as diappointing?
[18:05:04] <andypugh> Don’t you hate it when you have a good idea but don’t make it well enough?
[18:05:19] <andypugh> https://photos.app.goo.gl
[18:05:47] <andypugh> As you might guess, there is a fair bit of work in that.
[18:06:23] <andypugh> And if you look carefully, one of the widgets is broken, I must have got the heat treatment wrong.
[18:07:14] -!- ve7it has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[18:07:20] <tiwake> oh, on the center post
[18:07:56] <andypugh> (I can make new jaws, but I am not sure that the rest of it is good enough to ever work properly)

[18:08:47] <XXCoder> dunno you got some package to analynize stresses?
[18:08:49] <XXCoder> brb
[18:10:08] <andypugh> I think it would be OK with the right hardness. Before I hardened the jaws they worked, but bent a bit. So I heat treated (it’s tool steel) but probably didn’t temper enough.
[18:13:05] <tiwake> since its so small, just get pre-heat treated stuff and grind the things in

[19:16:07] <pink_vampire> andypugh: what is that device?
[19:16:34] <andypugh> It’s a widget for expanding the ends of small tubes.
[19:17:34] <pink_vampire> to make a hex from round tube?
[19:18:46] <andypugh> pink_vampire: Underneath: https://youtu.be
[19:18:57] <andypugh> To make a bigger hex from hex tube.
[19:20:12] <pink_vampire> i think something like a form tool that go inside is the way to go
[19:23:04] <andypugh> How do you get it in?
[19:24:05] <pink_vampire> push it in
[19:24:15] <andypugh> And how do you then get it out?
[19:24:49] <andypugh> These are very thin-wall delicate tubes. And they need to remain straight.
[19:28:55] <pink_vampire> just push it it on, and pull it with a screw
[19:29:46] -!- beachbumpete1 has joined #linuxcnc
[19:33:07] -!- beachbumpete1_ has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[19:33:41] <andypugh> The tubes are 300mm long, 0.15mm wall thickness. I think the tool needs to expand in-situ then compress.
[19:35:40] <andypugh> The conventional approach would be a split mandrel with a cone pulled up the middle. But it’s all a bit tiny really. I was hoping that my widget would be easier to control the final dimensions with. But that was when it was an idea in my head rather than the slightly wonky final realisation that I achieved in metal.
[19:41:43] <pink_vampire> just make it smaller
[19:44:08] <andypugh> I am not very good at tiny things. My machine has 0.05mm backlash, and that starts to matter at this sort of scale.
[19:46:17] <andypugh> On a larger scale I would make a hexagon and cut slits in it. But that won’t work here, as even my thinnest slitting saw leaves almost no hex.
[19:47:09] <andypugh> So I would have to make 6 tiny trangles, and think of a way to machine the taperd hole in the middle.
[19:48:05] <andypugh> I am not saying that it is impossible, but it isn’t the fun that this scroll chuck idea was.
[19:51:18] <Tom_L> :(
[19:56:24] -!- asdfasd1 has quit [Ping timeout: 255 seconds]
[19:57:25] <andypugh> And thinking about it, if I have a hole in the middle for the expansion cone, there is even less material in the petals (though they are better supported)
[19:58:00] <andypugh> Anyway, that’s the end of my workshop time for this easter break, back to re-roofing that shed tomorrow and Monday.

[22:40:48] <pink_vampire> no..

[22:47:34] <pink_vampire> this is what i got
[22:47:45] <pink_vampire> and now re build it
[22:48:08] <XXCoder> lathe attachment for your mill?
[22:48:17] <XXCoder> its visiually confusing so not clear
[22:48:59] <pink_vampire> lol no
[22:49:13] <pink_vampire> you are a full time machinist
[22:49:31] <pink_vampire> this is a mill attachment for a lathe
[22:49:49] <XXCoder> ahh making lathe into lathe/mill combo?
[22:50:10] <pink_vampire> correct
[22:50:25] <pink_vampire> it is bolted to the back of the bed
[23:07:36] <jdh> I got an R8 lathe chuck for my G0704. Don't think I ever took it out of the package
[23:07:57] <pink_vampire> R8 lathe chuck???
[23:08:18] <jdh> mini-lathe 3 jaw chuck on an R8
[23:08:21] <pink_vampire> not 5c??
[23:08:35] <pink_vampire> i see
[23:08:58] <jdh> no. just a 3 jaw.
[23:09:28] <pink_vampire> i need an ultrasonic cleaner
[23:10:01] <jdh> good for hard to reach parts but mechanical scrubbing is much more efficient
[23:10:37] <pink_vampire> the milling head is just packed with grease all over
[23:13:27] <jdh> solvent parts washer would rock
[23:14:26] <jdh> my ultrasonic cleaner seems to have weakened with age also.
[23:29:09] <roycroft> i has 2x72 belt grinder!
[23:29:17] <roycroft> i powered it up with a belt mounted for the first time this evening
[23:29:37] <XXCoder> ultrasonic seem to be good idea yeah
[23:29:39] <roycroft> it runs smooth and quiet, and tracks perfectly
[23:30:02] <pink_vampire> i need to clean small stuff like set screw holes
[23:30:17] * roycroft has a couple ultrasonic cleaners, and hasn't used his parts washer in ages
[23:30:19] <pink_vampire> how is the HF ultrasinic?
[23:31:15] <pink_vampire> there is 25% right now
[23:31:49] <pink_vampire> maybe roycroft want to donate one??
[23:32:42] <roycroft> i use this kind?
[23:32:43] <roycroft> :
[23:32:44] <roycroft> https://www.ebay.com
[23:32:53] <roycroft> i have a 2L and a 30L
[23:32:58] <roycroft> and i use them both constantly
[23:33:14] <roycroft> if you get one, here's a tip:
[23:33:23] <roycroft> just use plain water in the ultrasonic cleaner itself
[23:33:42] <pink_vampire> the hf is 2.5 and 160w
[23:33:50] <roycroft> if you need to use a solvent or simple green or something put it in a jar, put your parts in the jar, and set the jar in the basket
[23:34:35] <roycroft> the hf one is plastic
[23:34:40] <roycroft> the ebay ones are cheaper and ss
[23:37:24] <pink_vampire> seams like the hf is not so bad, and the inside is metal
[23:37:58] -!- veek has joined #linuxcnc
[23:41:31] <roycroft> if your environment can tolerate a plastic enclosure it might be fine
[23:41:41] <roycroft> mine's in my shop and a lot of stuff happens there
[23:42:02] <roycroft> they're vulnerable to being bumped and stuff
[23:42:14] <roycroft> so the metal enclosure is a big feature for me
[23:42:22] <pink_vampire> O_O not going to happen here
[23:42:33] <pink_vampire> i just want it to work
[23:42:35] <roycroft> the hf one you can try out and if you don't like it you can easily take it back
[23:42:39] <roycroft> the ones on ebay not so easily
[23:42:40] <roycroft> so there's that
[23:43:37] <roycroft> utrasonic cleaners are really noisy
[23:43:42] <roycroft> and in a very very irritating way
[23:44:08] <roycroft> so i would recommend that if you get one you find a home for it that's as far away from where you normally hang out as possible
[23:45:09] <pink_vampire> i need to remover very heavy grease
[23:45:55] <roycroft> diluted simple green in a heated ultrasonic cleaner will do a great job with that heavy grease
[23:46:38] <pink_vampire> ok, i know what i'm going to get this morning
[23:46:47] <pink_vampire> what is the green stuff??
[23:47:21] <roycroft> ultra green is a biodegradable, non-flammable cleaner that works brilliantly in general, and especially in ultrasonic cleaners
[23:47:29] <roycroft> and you can buy it at harbor freight
[23:47:42] <roycroft> as well as about every home improvement store everywhere
[23:48:21] <roycroft> er, simple green
[23:49:11] <pink_vampire> can't find it
[23:49:13] <pink_vampire> link?
[23:49:42] <roycroft> oh, it looks like they don't carry it any more
[23:49:58] <roycroft> you can get it at home depot
[23:50:10] <roycroft> https://www.homedepot.com
[23:50:39] <roycroft> you can dilute it 10:1 or so for an ultrasonic cleaner so a gallon will last a long time
[23:50:40] <pink_vampire> COOOL thanks!!
[23:50:47] <XXCoder> i use simple green at work. its quite good cleaner.
[23:51:05] <roycroft> it will remove paint if you give it enough time
[23:51:13] <pink_vampire> 90% water or the green stuff?
[23:51:20] <XXCoder> 90% water
[23:51:22] <roycroft> i would start with that
[23:51:42] <roycroft> if your grease is really really hard and thick, you might want to go with 5:1
[23:51:53] <roycroft> get the thing up to 60 degrees or so
[23:51:59] <roycroft> it works a lot better when it's that warm
[23:52:19] <pink_vampire> i need ultrasonic shower
[23:52:20] <roycroft> especially with greasy/waxy stuff
[23:52:58] <roycroft> i keep my cleaners in a lean-to ancillary workspace that's next to my garage
[23:53:00] <pink_vampire> i took the grease out with a spoon
[23:53:02] <roycroft> my air compressor lives there
[23:53:24] <roycroft> and my band saw and jointer are parked there - i occasonally use them out there, but usually wheel them into the shop when i'm using them
[23:53:40] <roycroft> and i'm not usually doing that kind of cleaning when i'm doing woodworking
[23:53:50] <roycroft> so the noise does not bother me
[23:54:23] <roycroft> but for stuff that's really crufty i'll clean for 30 minutees or longer
[23:54:32] <roycroft> sometimes as long as a couple hours
[23:55:04] <pink_vampire> hope it not die if i will run it for long time
[23:55:29] <roycroft> my 2L one i've had for ~20 years, and my 30L one ~5 years
[23:55:34] <roycroft> and i use them almost every day
[23:57:22] <pink_vampire> hope the hf will last
[23:57:46] <roycroft> they sell extended warranties
[23:58:05] <roycroft> if it dies during the warranty period they just give you a new one
[23:58:39] <pink_vampire> ok, i might get it
[23:59:12] <roycroft> they're great for jewelry and eyeglasses too
