[06:44:34] <XXCoder> it protects you against future shingle too though still could get
[06:44:51] <miss0r> as in: you can only get it once in a lifetime, and getting it before that age it is only an annoyance and not dangerous

[13:50:07] <andypugh> You have probably all heard of the electric dump truck in Switzerland that produces more electric than it consumes? I just found a web site claiming that it saves “50,000 tons of fuel annually”. Which rather suggests that some joirnalist can’t do arithmetic.
[13:51:33] <pcw_home> Does it only go downhill?
[13:52:06] <gregcnc> downhill loaded, up empty
[13:52:15] <pcw_home> Yeah
[13:52:20] <gregcnc> what do they do with the extra energy?
[13:53:16] <gregcnc> well math and all, journalists are word people

[14:01:03] <CaptHindsight> garbage producers on hills
[14:01:22] <gregcnc> maybe they plug it in to the grid to discharge it?
[14:02:53] <andypugh> I imagine that it works too many hours to afford to leave it idle to discharge.

[14:15:14] <CaptHindsight> the energy has to go somewhere
[14:15:27] <CaptHindsight> it can't just store it forever
[14:15:52] <andypugh> They probably have a thermal dump.
[14:16:42] <jthornton> air conditioner and stereo
[14:19:08] <CaptHindsight> https://www.swissinfo.ch
[14:20:04] <andypugh> Which says 500 tons of diesel, over 10 years. Which seems like a miscalculation the other way.
[14:20:54] <andypugh> (500 tons of diesel is only 64 tanks full, and I suspect that they would fill a diesel one more than once a week)
[14:21:14] <andypugh> (tanks full per year, that is)
[14:21:52] <CaptHindsight> well you have to admit that there lots of numbers, decimal points and other math stuff
[14:22:32] <CaptHindsight> easy for one person to lose track of
[14:24:10] <CaptHindsight> https://www.greencarreports.com
[14:24:27] <CaptHindsight> 600 kilowatt-hour battery pack
[14:24:42] <jthornton> that kind of truck would not work in the typical open pit mines over here
[14:25:00] <CaptHindsight> Marking that trip around 20 times a day, Kuhn Schweitz says the eDumper produces 200 kwh of surplus energy every day, or 77 megawatt-hours a year. A typical dump truck uses between 11,000 and 22,000 gallons of diesel fuel a year. That saves up to 196 metric tons of global-warming carbon-dioxide gas a year.
[14:26:15] <CaptHindsight> top of the grade with 80 percent, then recovering battery charge to 88 percent on the way down

[14:28:45] <CaptHindsight> 50kwh x 20 trips/day
[14:29:02] <CaptHindsight> ok so none of the numbers posted make any sense
[14:56:30] <andypugh> That has been my conclusion
[14:58:35] <sync> ah, that's quite the hack
[14:58:44] <sync> their quarry is higher than the rest
[14:59:11] <CaptHindsight> sometimes you can piece together a clearer picture from multiple stories
[14:59:16] <CaptHindsight> not in this case
[14:59:19] <andypugh> Yes, the headline statement is entirely reasonable and believable. It’s the numbers on fuel saved that don’t add up.

[17:09:02] <miss0r> I just call it cast iron.
[17:09:16] <roycroft> others make a distinction :)
[17:09:21] <miss0r> yeah
[17:09:33] <roycroft> and there is a big difference
[17:09:44] <roycroft> drop a chunk of cast iron and it's likely to break
[17:09:54] <roycroft> drop a chunk of ductile iron and it's likely to dent
[17:09:54] <miss0r> not sure of the exact composition of this slab, as it is something I dug out of a dumpster(with permission) from a place that manufactures hydraulic valve blocks
[17:10:07] <pink_vampire> miss0r: what mill do you have?
[17:10:19] <miss0r> pink_vampire: Its a Deckel maho 500C
[17:10:55] <JT-Shop> the shaper head is going on your mill?
[17:11:05] <miss0r> that is the idea, yeah
[17:11:36] <miss0r> well... not permanently. The idea is to swap between that and the vertical head
[17:11:53] <JT-Shop> cool, can't wait to see that in action
[17:12:37] <miss0r> You and me both
[17:13:14] -!- syyl has joined #linuxcnc
[17:33:38] <pink_vampire> Deckel is a very good brand.
[17:35:42] <andypugh> Did you consider having a casting made?
[17:36:04] <andypugh> It’s reasnably cost-effective. Though probably doesn’t beat “free from a skip”
[17:36:47] <miss0r> andypugh: Around here you'd be hard pressed to find somewhere to have it cast
[17:38:12] <andypugh> I would have said the same thing about round here, until folk pointed me at foundries. Foundrymen tend to not be great at web sites.
[17:39:29] <miss0r> yeah.. I might stumble across one at some point
[17:39:39] <syyl> hey miss0r
[17:39:46] <syyl> glad you got the package
[17:39:55] <miss0r> yeah - it looks great
[17:39:59] <syyl> all good?
[17:40:02] <syyl> yay :)
[17:41:04] <miss0r> although, as I wrote you in PM earlier; for the future, consider getting some of those cheap'o bubblewrap envolopes (the ones with no paper)
[17:41:33] <miss0r> that being said, I *do* enjoy getting to read up on some old german news ;P
[17:41:53] <syyl> i am heartpressed to buy/use plastic packaging material
[17:42:09] <miss0r> syyl: https://imgur.com <- what am I currently working on
[17:42:33] <miss0r> I head'ya... I've head you can get some seaweed packaging that works quite the same ;D
[17:42:35] <syyl> head adaptor for a horizontal mill?
[17:42:57] <miss0r> its a shaper head for the mill. to be swapped back and forth with the horisontal head
[17:43:05] <syyl> ah, got it
[17:43:09] <andypugh> I have been doing sand casting at home this week.
[17:43:21] <miss0r> andypugh: Not iron, I suppose?
[17:43:33] <andypugh> No, Pewter, using the gas stove.
[17:43:53] <andypugh> Just needed a lump of about the right size.
[17:44:16] <andypugh> https://photos.app.goo.gl
[17:44:33] <andypugh> (You might have seen that yesterday, in fact)
[17:44:42] <miss0r> I have not
[17:44:55] <miss0r> What exactly did you cast? :S
[17:45:40] <andypugh> For brass / pewter / aluminium there is a lot to be said for having a tub of petrobond sand just lying around. It lasts a long time and is ready to use immediately.
[17:45:55] <sync> oh, andypugh since you mentioned it in gitter, do you have a source for inconel bar stock?
[17:46:11] <andypugh> miss0r: The sandy / lumpy / melted but at the bottom of the 116 year old tankard.
[17:46:37] <miss0r> why? :D
[17:47:14] <sync> because somebody broke the glass in it, most probably
[17:47:17] <andypugh> sync: ebay?
[17:48:02] <andypugh> Well, this one had had the glass broken, then it was sent for repair to a company that make spun sheet tankards, who cut off the old base and soldered on their own base, that then fell of in use.
[17:48:09] <andypugh> sync: https://www.ebay.co.uk
[17:49:06] <andypugh> So I decided to make an accurate replica of the original base, with a new glass. The original bases are about 6mm thick and take a lot of use.
[17:49:45] <sync> those are .... very uncompetitive prices
[17:50:01] <sync> I thought you might have had something different :)
[17:52:00] <andypugh> No, I have never had any need for inconel.
[17:52:23] <andypugh> And I imagine that all those that do have very deep pockets as they are spending governent money.
[17:53:45] <andypugh> miss0r: My old University has a collection of about 300 pewter tankards engraved with the names of all the encumbents of every union and club post since the founding of the college. https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org
[17:54:36] <andypugh> You can see them in the background of that photo. (And also me, drinking from one of them)
[17:54:48] <sync> well, I have a need for inconel
[17:55:02] <sync> any stainless is burning up in under a minute
[17:55:25] <andypugh> What’s the application?
[17:57:08] <sync> something that gets very hot and spins very fast
[17:57:50] <andypugh> A white dwarf star?
[17:59:37] <sync> no, an axial flow turbine
[18:00:49] <andypugh> That was my second guess
[18:01:31] <andypugh> Oh, by the way, after machining and soldering, the tankard looks like this, and I am drinking from it at this very moment (well, you need to test these things) https://photos.app.goo.gl
[18:02:45] <andypugh> It seems that you can gert small inconel bolts fairly cheaply, but those are probably too small.
[18:07:49] <sync> yeah
[18:14:03] -!- skunkworks has joined #linuxcnc
[18:14:32] <skunkworks> really need to get a ups on that computer..
[18:19:12] <JT-Shop> all the parts bags are packed so I think it's safe to update my inventory...
[18:19:35] <andypugh> Hmm, Stuart Stevenson can probably find Inconel.
[18:19:59] <Tom_L> i haven't heard of many shops running it around here
[18:20:10] <Tom_L> they probably do but you never see any scrap
[18:20:44] <Tom_L> worst we ever ran was tungsten

[19:08:06] <sync> andypugh: unfortunately not really
[19:08:13] <sync> about 60-70mm iirc
[19:17:36] <andypugh> Hmm… https://www.autoblog.com
[19:18:02] <andypugh> Has an inconel turbine, apparently.
[19:18:58] <andypugh> Oh dear, another clueless joirnalist “ The new turbocharger apparently employs "rocket engine materials" for heat resistance; in this case it's a turbine wheel made from Inconel, an aerospace aluminum. “
[19:20:02] <andypugh> Same web site. Different journalist
[19:20:39] <sync> they all do
[19:20:59] <sync> it's some high nickel alloy on all modern turbos
[19:21:51] <andypugh> Yeah, but that article has a certain irony.
[19:22:18] <andypugh> On monday I am going to Pikes Peak, to test that engine, and that turbo.
[19:23:32] <Tom_L> fun
[19:23:40] <sync> why even bother with going to pikes peak? don't you have a high altitude chamber?
[19:24:33] <Tom_L> yeah but he likes to travel
[19:25:02] <andypugh> Yes, in Germany. But there are manouvers that it is hard to do on dyno rolls. Also we need to look at exhaust smoke, and we can’t do that in the chamber, as the exhaust is always on extract.
[19:26:16] <sync> hmm
[19:26:33] <sync> I don't think the chamber I used had exhaust extraction
[19:28:39] <sync> huh, smoke... can't you just look for opacity in the gas?
[19:29:11] <andypugh> (I actually don’t like travelling at all, I would prefer to never leave my workshop, really.)
[19:29:37] <sync> I think the chamber we used had a huge radial blower on the suction side and they just throttled the inlet plus some internal air recirculation thing to simulate airflow
[19:29:54] <sync> and to cool/heat the air
[19:30:39] <andypugh> sync: In theory, but it’s hard to tell the difference between HC and condensation (for example) when it’s an instrument rather than eyeballs.
[19:31:08] <andypugh> Pikes Peak isn’t actually ideal, as we are meant to test to 5200m
[19:32:07] <andypugh> Our chamber is completely sealed and the huge pump still struggles to hit the altitude.
[19:32:33] <sync> I think it did 4500m
[19:32:55] <sync> (it was built for a certain car on said mountain in the 80s)
[19:34:52] <andypugh> Who built that? Perhaps we should have used them rather than the ones we did use to build our brand-new 5200m facility. Latest from the chap who manages it “The temperature controller has broken, and the repairs to the seals to return to 5200m capability have made thigns worse"
[19:37:56] <sync> I think they engineered it in house
[19:38:09] <sync> at least I did not see a mfg very obviously
[19:40:02] <sync> I really need to get my gas metrology together and rig some dyno up

[20:40:34] <_unreal_> milling now
[20:40:46] <_unreal_> I cant FREAKING make the holes those. blows my mind.
[20:40:58] <_unreal_> those=though
[21:07:16] <_unreal_> any one know of a software that lets you edit GCODE like cad?

[21:15:00] <jdh> I use notepad++
[21:15:18] <_unreal_> not what I mean
[21:15:38] <_unreal_> What I mean is being able to edit a GCODE like a cad drawing
[21:17:05] <jdh> yeah. I know. imo, if it isn't easy enough to edit in as gcode, just regenerate the code to do what you really wanted.
[21:26:30] <_unreal_> I cant complain to much my PCB is perfect. I just wish I could add a DRILL plane :(
[21:28:07] <jdh> I generate gcode for each tool due to no tool changer
[21:28:48] <_unreal_> ! maybe I could ahhh hum
[21:29:03] <_unreal_> I think I have an idea now on how to COULD/COULD have done it

[21:29:30] <_unreal_> then I need to go hand drill the 8 holes

[21:30:08] -!- utoto_ has parted #linuxcnc
[21:30:08] <_unreal_> purchased 4 MINI vac pumps can pull 25hg

[21:30:45] <_unreal_> if the vac pump ever goes bad I "may" still have nice motor to screw with
[21:31:09] <_unreal_> Got my desktop FULLY setup now
[21:31:13] <_unreal_> software wise
[21:31:24] <_unreal_> Now I have to do it all over again with that I5 system
